The Windows Registry – What You Don’t Know Could Hurt You by beconrad

If you use a Windows based computer, chances are good that your computing life is ruled by a tiny file known as the Windows registry. If you are like most computer users you know little about this important file, but if it becomes corrupt, damaged or unusable you will certainly learn a great deal about it. Corrupt and damaged Windows registry files are among the leading causes of computer problems, including unexpected shutdowns, repeated freezing, system lockups and other annoying issues.

The job of the Windows registry is to keep track of everything on the computer. Every time you add a piece of software, plug in or unplug a piece of hardware or make a change to the PC, that action is recorded in the Windows registry. When you add that great new printer to your PC, the Windows registry knows about it. When you uninstall that program that never quite worked right, the Windows registry keeps track of the change. When you download that file sharing program or photo editing software package, that information is stored in the Windows registry.

This helps to make the Windows registry file perhaps the most powerful part of any Windows based machine. The problem is that it is easy for this simple file to become corrupt and damaged over time. Regularly scanning, cleaning and repairing the Windows registry can help keep common computer problems at bay and keep the PC running like new. If your PC has become sluggish and unstable, it could be traced to a damaged or corrupt Windows registry file. By repairing the registry and removing unneeded entries computer users can speed up their systems and help the programs run more efficiently.

There are many reasons that Windows registry files become damaged. One of the most common problems is that many software programs do not uninstall cleanly. They may leave traces behind in various registry keys, and these unneeded keys can slow the PC down and cause other problems. While one or two excess registry keys may not cause problems, these issues can build on themselves over time, causing the system to slow considerably over time. Registry cleaners can nip these problems in the bud and prevent these common problems from happening in the first place. Regular registry cleaning should be part of every computer owner’s routine maintenance, just as important as anti-virus software and spyware scanning programs.
