Security packages: Norton vs. Kaspersky

Norton and Kaspersky also provide good protection to your computer. The current generation of competition is on an “environmentally friendly” – the operating simplicity, performance and comfort. We took the two programs battle head – head.

Every computer user knows what’s good for him, holding on his computer at least three security tools: firewall, anti – virus software Anti – Spyware (Anti-Spyware). Many users more tools to protect their computers from spam, block advertisements, or to filter the content their children are exposed to them.

With so many types – it’s horrible and condemns software tools from them, handling computer security may become tedious business of gravity, for the user and computer. Security packages like these two will be compared here – Norton Internet Security (or NIS) and Kaspersky Internet Security (or KIS) – designed to simplify the task and offer complete protection with a collection of tools that operate in an integrated and managed.

Of course, theory is one thing and reality another, and over the years turned out more than security suite software products tend to be heavy with a lot of unnecessary features.

The challenge: security transparent to the user

The first security package introduced Symantec Corp. in 1999, and in recent years gradually joined McAfee, F-Secure, Panda, Trend Micro, Eset and others, with their own packages.

Kaspersky is a Russian girl of the bunch, was the last show of its own security suite, but the new version of its product should – at least – according to its claim – to be groundbreaking as regards operating performance and simplicity. Anti engines as a company – its software products are used for years for companies such as Juniper, Check – Point, F-Secure and others, this claim is worth testing.

Symantec’s new package is an interesting story in itself. In recent years has eroded the status of this old company, especially against the claims by many professional users that its products have become to “Bloatwares” meaning swelled and became overly cumbersome and demanding in their resource requirements.

Current version is supposed to be a different story. According to Symantec where access is implemented it calls “Zero Impact Performance”, and managed to get under her quick and efficient product that the user is not aware of unless he should know. So who will win – the experience of Symantec or Kaspersky’s agility? We tried, and we have answers.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

2010 version of Kaspersky Internet Security is the most comprehensive to date, and includes most of the tools offered by other security packages and some innovations of its own.

We tested the same version of experience, comes a setup file on the volume of only 36MB, that was installed on our test computer instantly (about four minutes, including all settings). Installation is complete; the software caught 27MB of disk space only.

KIS 2010 includes tools firewall, anti – virus, anti – spyware, anti – spam, privacy tools, content filtering, intrusion detection, Anti-Phishing, blocking advertisements, a dedicated tool to identify threats such keygen and so on.

Besides anti-Engine – a new virus, which should be significantly faster, it includes several levels of protection and heuristics, to identify suspicious activity by applications running on your computer.

During installation you are asked if you want to keep the firewall built into Windows and disable it. By default, you write the software program Kaspersky Security Network (which send information about the risks found on your computer to improve the protections in your software and with other users), but it allows you to give up the pleasure if you insist.

Simple software interface easy and intuitive and organized manner. All the tools and settings are accessible with just a click or two. During a scan to search other harmful viruses, displays a precise indication of the test of time and progress percentage. Settings screens hiding behind the main window is very detailed.

In addition, the software includes several tools missing in most other packages, such as search tools and repair problematic browser settings and computer in general, not create a boot disk (using PE Builder tool), and automatically create security report gives a broad picture of your situation. We loved the vessels anti – spam and simple integration with the Outlook mail program, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird.

After we removed about 100 mail messages, he came to 95 percent success, without identifying the wrong one. Besides the transfer of messages on Suspicious box – your choice, the software identifies highlights messages trying to refer you to sites “impostors” (Phishing) and allows you to view messages waiting in a separate window on the server you downloaded them before.

Software performance indeed impressive. She performed a full scan of our drive, a 55GB file, within 15 minutes and two seconds. The software also provides the possibility to quickly test that took us about -9.5 seconds. Using the software throughout its memory requirements were not the 30MB.

Norton Internet Security 2010

The goal, if we understand it, is to convince the critics that the product really been a dramatic change, and enable professional users to influence the final design.

This comprehensive package includes tools firewall, anti – virus anti – spyware, intrusion detection tools, protection against spam, phishing scams privacy protection, “Parental Controls” and more. Most prominent change it, at least at first glance, it face-lift last interface.

Installation After downloading the software installation volume 640KB, download installation files from the network, including capacity of about 60MB. Disk space that NIS 2010 consumes after installation is as 70MB.

The installation process is not accompanied by wizards long, though a bit tedious but useful and too scary. All in – all, we removed the package and regulations within six or seven minutes; In comparison with the previous version of the package it took us over half an hour.

Symantec made considerable efforts not only to optimize the software code, but also make the package look “easy”, and most of the features now accessible in one central window with a minimalist design. The main security tools can be run neutralize single click; tools and advanced settings are accessible with just a click Details.

Two clicks you can also switch to Silent Mode, provides no new transparent system for times when you prefer to concentrate on watching a movie or computer game.

Left column of the main screen there is a “resource meter” that displays at any given moment the salvage processor (CPU Usage) of NIS and the entire system. Below is a link to Norton Insight, a tool that allows to identify and define processes (Processes) as “safe” to save the need for frequent tests – by NIS hurt PC performance.

Mechanism of the oldest running LiveUpdate now often much closer, but very quick updates. Any point in time there is indication of time since the last update.

Below the surface, NIS 2010 has remained strong and sophisticated package, with a mountain of advanced settings this time a little better organized. Another tool to analyze the structure of the home network security and quality of her eyes is not all – so intuitive, despite the many explanations which he accompanied.

This version has been improved including software integration with IM and mail clients better and works more smoothly than previous versions (although Outlook only versions that still supported). Another simple feature protection from spam, enables “train” the software via mail folders that contain messages that are spam. With this feature, and after a few filtering spam more easily reached the level of detection of approximately 98 percent.

Blacksmith h-NIS takes memory while using the ranges around 57MB. On the one hand, it is nearly twice the package of Kaspersky. On the other hand, it is more than reasonable given the volume of memory of 1-2GB accepted today, and more important: this number does not grow while you scan.

Scan data speak for themselves: a full scan of the computer test (Full System Scan) lasted 15:10 minutes. Rapid scan lasted about 12 seconds. I only wish Symantec had not bothered to add a precise indication of progress scan.

So who’s better?

To get rid of the Bloatware (bloated software) and paste it, NIS 2010 has not just a facelift but also significantly improved the core code and it showed in her performance system requirements. The result – as the key promises – is that it has become almost imperceptible, what was difficult to say about its earlier versions.

Although Symantec’s efforts to make the NIS package fit the laymen and professional users, still has the feeling that the product could have been friendlier.

KIS 2010 can be slightly more cost-effective resources to our taste, even more convenient and friendly than NIS. In terms of performance difference between the two is negligible, but the lower the resource requirements of KIS can be significant and less powerful computers.

In addition, Kaspersky has chosen wisely to add unique segregation its product to other products in the field, including Symantec’s product. Can anti – spam of KIS slightly less good than the NIS, but it offers integration with mail clients that NIS does not support.

In short, it’s hard to crown winner, but today there are good reasons than ever to buy and use security packages. Norton is both the product of Kaspersky and show significant improvements in new versions, the choice between them seems more and more like a matter of personal preference. Well there are free trial versions you can install and test experience.
